Leftists define democracy as leftist dictatorship. Leftist dictatorship is democracy. They even call it “dictatorship of the proletariat” , the “proletariat” being the faction of intellectuals supposedly working on behalf of the proletariat.

So any undermining of leftist dictatorship is an “attack on democracy”.

Leftism is a scam to put leftists in power. They morally browbeat the middle class into giving them this power.

Democracy (actual democracy) is mob rule. A healthy, educated middle class understands this. So we have republican forms of government as a check on mob rule. When leftists denigrate populism, they are cynically appealing to this sentiment.

Leftist rule across the globe is now so odious and unjust that the mob, the majority, is more just than the rulers. This is populism.

Majoritarian will doesn't necessarily align with common good, people can choose against their own interests, whether aware or unaware, if common good is objective then it can't justify itself using ad populum which is the actual basis of voting mechanism, that means a single person can know better than the rest what are the neccessary policies and measures in behalf of their own collective wellbeing, if they're enacted by autocratic means that doesn't change them into bad
