2016 – The coming of Caesarism?

Year 2016 has brought such a fundamental changes to the West that it is necessary to step outside of the controversy, emotions and scandals and look at the broader, historical significance of Brexit, Trump and the nationalist counter-culture that is growing stronger in almost every country. Already in 2014 and 2015 national-conservative forces gained much influence in the parliamentary elections in the Intermarium region, but the success anti-establishment movements in U.K. and U.S. in 2016 are significant, because they happened in the countries that have the biggest geopolitical and ideological influence in the Western world. They wanted more immigration, they got awakening of nationalism. They wanted closer union, they got Brexit. They wanted more political correctness, they got Trump. “End of history” that was declared after collapse of USSR in 1991 has officially ended. Even more – it seems that 2016 was the same for ultra-liberalism that 1991 was for communism. Ultra-liberalism is dead. And we have killed it.

Nevertheless, this does not mean that everything is great from this moment just because of this. To be anti-globalist, anti-establishment etc. is a thing of past in this situation. It is important to grasp the new situation, the dangers and the possibilities it brings to Europeans. Certainly, West has become weaker as such. China has a vision of the world in its leadership. Russia has its geopolitical goals of re-creation of its empire. Meanwhile, “experts” from EU are worried about LGBT rights abuses in Ukraine, while every day Ukrainian soldiers are dying in a war that Russia wages in European country… While these “experts” are out of touch with reality, and this is why they still do not understand how Trump phenomena happened, we are not. Struggle for European future has only started. This is why European nationalists now need not the negative ideology of what they are against, but a positive, vanguard vision of the Western world in their leadership. Where no European nation would be sacrificed, where West would be strong enough and transcended post-modernity to be equal to China and superior to Russia. 1991 was a geopolitical catastrophe for USSR. 2016 should not be for the West. Therefore, a vision of future, a project of reborn West is needed more than ever and only nationalist vanguard is able to bring it.

Mr. Orban in his meeting with Poland’s Jaroslaw Kaczynski said that “Brexit is a fantastic opportunity for us. We are at a historic cultural moment. There is a possibility of a cultural counter-revolution right now.” These are one of the most important words that have been said in this context – this is an opportunity for a new worldview to re-shape Europe and the West.

Let us look even deeper in the past, beyond 1991, and beyond 1930’s wave of anti-liberalism in the West. Oswald Spenger wrote about Caesarism – period when politics of mind and money are replaced with politics of spirit, strength and leadership. Spengler prophesised that Caesarism of Augustus will re-emerge in the Western world at the beginning of 21st century. It seems that Spengler was right – as he mostly is. Force-politics have won over money. The need for something authentic, something alive and great has triumphed. Yet, there are also negative sides in the Caesarism, as described by Spengler – mainly the lack of spiritual core and primitiveness of political forms. This again requires vision and project for future. It is not enough to “conserve”, to return to how things were. Augustus tried to do that in Rome, to revive the ancient virtues of Romans, to glorify its past. . He reorganized the empire and made it last longer, but it was not enough. To succeed ethnic and spiritual principles have to be united with futuristic and modern approaches. New worldview and spiritual core to the changes that are happening now around us are necessary to make these changes in to an opportunity, not a danger. Creation and implementation of this worldview in the context of theese fundamental changes might be the most important tasks for nationalists in the Intermarium region and Europe right now.
